MI Team Overview
One of the most successful IPL teams, Mumbai Indians (MI), won the IPL trophy on as many as five occasions. However, when the IPL started in 2008, they were one of the average teams.
The story of their rise is fascinating. After the first two mediocre seasons, Mukesh Ambani, who bought the franchise for ₹447.6 crore, made wholesale changes. The franchise acquired new T20 specialists, while big names found themselves dropped from their position of responsibility

One instance is Sachin Tendulkar, dropped from his captaincy position after years of not-so-decent performances. Bold moves were taken, like when a 26-year-old Rohit Sharma was named the skipper. They groomed a virtually unknown Kieron Pollard into a fine all-rounder. Similarly, an unorthodox Lasith Malinga was invested in for a long time.
The results started to show within a few years. They won their first title in 2013 and never looked back. The Mumbai-based franchise went on to win the trophies in the 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020 seasons.
During all these years, they redefined excellence, with other teams following their lead as Mumbai Indians acquired players like Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya, who became IPL superstars before they made their India debuts. Not only did they redefine how cricket was being played on and off the field, but their auction strategy was also closely examined.
Mumbai Indians stood out in terms of clinicalness as well. They packed up their support staff with big names but removed them quickly if the team struggled on the field. Also, they are among the few clean franchises that remained unscathed when the IPL spot-fixing scandal broke out in 2013.
Since winning the title in 2020, Mumbai Indians have reached the playoffs only once in the last four seasons. In the upcoming season, they will be looking to clinch a record sixth IPL title.
